DOULA SERVICES

Why Am I A Doula?

From the moment I had my youngest child 14 years ago I knew I wanted to support as many people as I could through their journey in a way that left them feeling in control, listened to and positive. Having had 5 children including twins I have had a variety of scenarios including induction, spontaneous labour, emergency caesarean, planned caesarean all with a different outcome than I had planned or even envisaged. My last birth which was my planned c section due to grade 4 placenta previa, I can honestly say it was a truly positive and amazing birth....... because I was supported fully in all the decisions I made :-)

Birthing people have traditionally been supported during their pregnancy, labour and especially in the post partum period and there is good evidence that this benefits parents and baby.

Research has shown having a Doula can mean:

  • Reduced risk of Caesarean birth

  • Shorter Labour

  • Reduced rate of Induction

  • Increased likelihood of initiating Breastfeeding

  • Reduced risk of Instrumental Birth

  • Increased parental satisfaction with birth experience

  • Reduced need for pain killers or epidural during birth

  • Improve equality and provide culturally responsive care

As your Doula I will be there for you and your family in each and every decision you make throughout your journey, providing you with emotional, practical and informational support, I will serve as a soothing voice of reassurance, help with relaxation techniques including pregnancy massage and reflexology and if needed I can advocate for you, ensuring that you are able to make fully informed choices.

My aim is to help you feel well supported, empowered and positive.

I am on the Kingston MVP (Maternity Voices Partnership) which gives me the opportunity to help improve maternity services within my local area. I am also a volunteer Doula with a local charity that support vulnerable women, through this charity I have completed several courses and workshops including:

  • Adult and Child safeguarding

  • AIMS Information and Consent

  • Make Birth Better - Trauma Informed Care For Birth

  • Perinatal Mental Health and Safeguarding

  • Restoring Harmony - Trauma Recovery

Before deciding what package is right for you we will have a relaxed and informal chat to make sure we are right for each other. It's important that you are fully comfortable and at ease with my personality to ensure the support you get is exactly what you are looking for.

I am also a Hypnobirthing and Antenatal Teacher - currently Doula packages do not include hypnobirthing/antenatal classes but a private 1-1 course can be added on if required for an additional cost. Please contact me for further details

Postnatal Doula

Very often parents are expected to just instinctively fall into parenthood, realistically its a little tougher than that and the support of friends and family can be invaluable. Its quite common for families to not have that support network and that's where I come in!

I am here to support you and your family practically, emotionally and physically during the first 6 weeks (longer if needed) to ensure you have a relaxed and enjoyable fourth trimester :-)

Tailored to each family and can be adjusted as we go but can include:

  • Sign posting to local services

  • Help and guidance with feeding

  • Providing/cooking nutritious meals

  • Light housework

  • Holding your space - this includes birth debrief, hand holding, shoulder leaning and anything in between to make sure you feel emotionally supported

  • Helping with older children or pets if needed

  • Running errands such as prescription collection or grabbing a few groceries

  • Guidance and help with practical tasks such as bathing, changing, sleep, baby wearing

  • Caring for baby while you sleep/eat/shower

  • Accompanying you to appointments or even just going for a walk

  • Staying overnight

I'm a breastfeeding support worker and also trained in massage, reflexology and baby massage as well experience in aromatherapy and herbal remedies if you would like a more holistic approach.

Because this support is individually tailored costs can vary but start from £25 per hour for a minimum of 2 hours (some holistic therapies will incur an additional cost)
